Jenny Bates, London campaigner for Friends of the Earth, said: "Boris Johnson must abandon plans that will make the situation worse, such as scrapping the western extension to the congestion charge, pursuing more river crossings for vehicles and supporting a 50% increase in flights from City airport. This means taking strong action himself, rather than relying on uncommitted government measures to do the job."
When I was a kid, as the 70s crept by smelling of Brut and patchouli, I seem to recall my parents whispering the word like a mantra. They talked of dinner round at Martin and Sue's where there had been smears of it on Ritz crackers: Mike and Jenny served it with roughly torn 'French stick'. For a while it was an impossible aspiration, distant and somehow not for people like us - like a stereo or shagpile carpet, but when the time came that they felt confident enough to entertain, p??t?© would be as proud on the menu as the bottle of Bull's Blood, chambreeing gently on the coffee-table. P??t?© was less socially awkward than wife-swapping and it represented international sophistication in a single slab of greying pork mince. The stuff from the supermarket or the deli came in oval ceramic crocks (my mother, as I remember, would flirt openly with the spud-faced geriatric in the butchery section, who dispensed the empties as gifts to his 'special ladies'). The tops were aspicked and coded with arcane trimmings. The wrinkled slice of orange meant the 'Ardenne', a liverish concoction that may, or may not, have contained duck. There were green peppercorns on the top of the 'liver p??t?©', almost certainly rejected from GUM stores for being too unappetising and ending up as a submarine boiler caulk in Gdansk. Best though, by far, was 'p??t?© de campagne' which may have looked like dogfood but was packed with enough French military-grade garlic to knock out a passing camel.
But the most misguided of all costumed events was surely 1987's It's a Royal Knockout. Those of us who were there, goggling at the godforsaken sight of Prince Edward in doublet and hose, still cannot speak about it. Let us leave it to comedian Sean Lock, who suggested that the whole thing â?? vegetable costumes, John Travolta'n'Jenny Agutter-participation and all â?? be renamed "It's a malarial dream".

And all this stuff, in the digital age, is literally worthless financially, and losing any value it had daily. There's nothing here a burglar would even bother with. I'm aware I'm a social relic from an age when you walked through the shopping centre with an unbagged album under your arm to show like-minded souls who you were, and when the book as an object was quietly fetishised. Now kids stake out their personal space with knives and guns and gadgets, and working stiffs flip falsified pages of virtual books on Kindles. I'm like a character in a dystopian science-fiction novel, holed up in a cave full of cultural artefacts, waiting for the young Jenny Agutter to arrive in a tinfoil miniskirt, fleeing a poisonous cloud on the surface, to check out my stash and ask me: "Who exactly was the Quicksilver Messenger Service? Who was this Virginia Woolf? What kind of man was Jonah Hex?"
As if on cue, a man approaches and slaps Pierre on the shoulder. It turns out to be the owner of the bar. "How's yourself?" he asks. "And how's Jenny?" (Jenny is Peter's partner, an Australian woman about whom he remains resolutely tight-lipped.) They talk for a minute about this and that, then the owner bids us farewell and another round arrives as if by magic. "They're as good as gold here," says Pierre, smiling. "I was here for two years before anyone knew I was a writer. And, in between them not knowing and knowing, they haven't skipped a beat. They were fantastic then and continue to be so."
