On the final day, the Speck Queen is crowned.
It's a large space, with an elegant warren of dining spaces out back, all slate floors and columns, lattice-work screens, knobbly bits of ancient Indian carved wood and the odd flash of colour. It's probably the most understated space in Blackpool. Mind you the inside of Liberace's wardrobe would probably be understated compared to most of this town. The menu is long, but the food is marked by an uncommon freshness and vivacity. Our party was divided over the robustness of achari fish tikka â?? hunks of cod marinated in a pickle-flavoured yogurt masala, then roasted in the tandoor, though with care so the flakes still fell away from each other. Yes, there was a punch of heat, but not so that you couldn't taste anything else. Tandoori roasted prawns, although that slightly worrying shade of red that speaks of the colouring cabinet, were equally assertive.
So we spoke to an eight-year-old and 10-year-old as well, who knew what shag bands were. "There were a couple of boys who were giving them out as free presents," remembered one, "and saying you had to sex someone if you broke itâ?? nobody told the teachers." (They also informed us that some of the latest playground insults are "you chocolate-flavoured condom" or "you rainbow-coloured condom", both of which will definitely be used in my next argument.)
For the most part, the cooking is spot on. They serve mammoth portions of big-flavoured food designed to soak up the beer. Thick pieces of quality bread smeared with a big, sticky mix of ham hock and trotter burnished with sesame seeds is exactly the sort of the thing you would want to trough as you work your way down the draft list, all of which is available by the thirds of pints as well as halves. We drank something dark and smoked called Schlenkerla Rauchbier which, with the piggy toast, made the whole thing taste like a bag of Frazzles.
A salad of Orkney bacon with soft duck eggs and spinach was underdressed but pleasing all the same. A sweet onion tart overlaid with a disc of very good goat's cheese was terrifyingly sweet, but alongside a glass of bitter ale worked very well. Mains bigger than my head didn't sacrifice quality to quantity: a huge, crisp-skinned chicken breast came with an apricot and almond stuffing and a classy dauphinoise. Better still was my burger: a serious piece of meat served thick and rare with smoked cheese in a soft, sweet but proper bit of bun alongside good fries. Curiously, a disastrous treacle tart was nothing of the sort. No matter. I drank an intensely sweet cherry-flavoured beer called Mort Subite Kriek to make up for it, a brew for people who don't like beer. It suited me perfectly.
