Gunfire was also reported in another southern city, Jalalabad, where yesterday a mob burned a university, besieged a police station and seized an armored vehicle and other weapons from a local military unit. Thousands of Kyrgyz men brandishing sticks, metals bars and hunting rifles gathered at the city's horse racing track, shouting anti-Uzbek slogans.
The flight, to Girona in Spain, had been due to leave at 2pm but by 6pm the flight's besieged crew called the police.
So the small number of Brits, Irish and New Zealanders of bold intent who turned up to do their best to help arrived in Sarajevo to find a strange demimonde of slaughter and cultural ferment. These were not "career" aid workers with bureaucracy and armoured vehicles behind them, but ad hoc trade union groups and concerned citizens on something called The Serious Road Trip, the first independent aid organisation into the city. The Road Trip, set up in 1991, laid the foundations for War Child, arriving in besieged Sarajevo in trucks painted with bright colours and cartoon characters to tease the snipers. They were joined by Simon Glinn, a music producer who ran the Jazz World stage at Glastonbury, not so much to deliver aid as work with the Sarajevan underground scene to organise rock concerts and events under a banner calling itself the Sarajevo Community Music Project, and even a festival with Radio Zid called Rock Under Siege. "I'm not sure I'd do it like that now," says Glinn, currently executive director of the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall and events, "but people of our age then probably would. If one was to paste a philosophy on to that madness, which was brave and lucky, I'd say just that this was about solidarity, multiculturalism and, well, the fundamental principles of good rock'n'roll."

Khayelitsha, a place long notorious for violent crime, will add a new chapter to the diverse history of Godot, famously described as "a play in which nothing happens, twice" and endlessly resonant across time and space. Memorable productions have been staged in a besieged Sarajevo in 1993, California's San Quentin prison and in New Orleans after hurricane Katrina.
Susan Sontag, who directed Godot in a besieged Sarajevo in 1993, declared: "Beckett's play, written over 40 years ago, seems written for, and about, Sarajevo".
Around Ballinamore, DBC Pierre â?? the initials stand for Dirty But Clean, a nickname he earned in his spectacularly misspent youth â?? is known by his real name, Peter Finlay. Or, simply "the writer fella from up the mountain". He has been living in relative seclusion a few miles from here for almost nine years. When he won the Booker Prize in 2003 for Vernon God Little, the village was besieged by reporters for a week. He has since written three novels in the extraordinary peace and quiet of the Leitrim countryside: Ludmila's Broken English, which came out in early 2006 to mixed reviews, an unnamed novel that he jettisoned last year for reasons still not entirely clear, and Lights Out In Wonderland, which will be published next month.
At one point, I ask him how the locals reacted when the British and Irish media descended on Ballinamore in the wake of his Booker prize victory in 2003. Back then, his house had been besieged by photographers and buzzed by a helicopter. It must have seemed, at times, like an episode of Father Ted.
Zero Hour! (yes, they even stole the exclamation mark) was a 1957 potboiler written by Airport's Arthur Hailey, and the trio swiped its absurd food-poisoning-at-30,000ft plot â?? and a lot of its dialogue â?? then besieged it with their full comedic powers. They also targeted the whole Airport disaster movie franchise, and snagged a powerful, sympathetic producer at Paramount, Howard W Koch, who had once headed the studio and lent heft in casting roles.
By the end of my time there the professional autograph hunter, an odd breed who would not have looked out of place in the League of Gentlemen, had besieged us. Brazenly presumptuous and extremely chippy, they would come armed with marker pens and a portfolio of glossy photographs and even replica shirts they would expect to have signed that would then appear on eBay within a couple of hours. When cameras began to be incorporated into mobile phones a new craze was unleashed and hundreds of people must have blurred photographs of themselves with their arms around a gurning sportsman trapped on obsolete handsets at the back of drawers. The most impudent of customers will also have long-forgotten answerphone outgoing messages coerced from the likes of Frank Worthington or Dickie Bird.
