After her daughter, Alex, was killed by a cement mixer while cycling to work at a City law firm in 2000, Cynthia Barlow bought shares in the company that owned the lorry and successfully lobbied them to have state-of-the-art safety equipment fitted.
Cemex lorries now have extra mirrors that dramatically reduce the drivers' blind spots, as well as sensors along the side of that alert them if a cyclist is alongside and an exterior voice warning which say, "Caution, vehicle turning left". The equipment costs Â?545 per vehicle. Barlow notes:
The original Take That lineup may be back, but it probably won't be for good. At least that's what songwriter Gary Barlow hinted at today, saying that Robbie Williams could leave the band after they have completed a planned album and tour together.
Speaking on BBC Radio 1, Barlow said: "It's 20 years since we began and we agreed to do a one-off album â?? and maybe a one-off tour would be great this year. But I think once we've done [that] Rob will go back to being Rob and we'll go back to being a four. I think it will resume to how it was. We are talking about a tour right now so hopefully next summer we will tour."
Despite a series of hit solo albums, Williams has always seemed scarred by his exit from the band. Shortly after leaving he made a series of barbed comments about Barlow in the press, and recorded the song No Regrets in 1998, which painted his time in the band in a purely negative light.
Barlow has admitted that Williams "hurt me more than anyone else has". However, after a series of tentative meetings, Williams rejoined the band in July, and the pair's relationship now seems better than ever. When asked later by a fan on Twitter if he found working with Barlow "awkward after all this time", Williams replied: "It was amazing. Not awkward at all, I love him to bits. [My wife] Ayda calls him my boyfriend."
Barlow admitted that the band had always felt guilty about how Williams left the band, saying: "We had a lot of guilt because Rob was the youngest, the most impressionable of all of us. We always felt like we didn't look after him enough."
Although Take That fans might have to enjoy Robbie's return while they can, they can at least console themselves with the news that Williams and Barlow will be performing together at the Heroes Concert at Twickenham Stadium on 12 September. The concert, which is in aid of the charity Help for Heroes, will see the pair perform Shame together for the first time on a bill that also features X Factor winner Alexandra Burke, Plan B and the Saturdays.
Take That have sold out the biggest live tour in UK and Irish history. After tickets went on sale on Friday morning, the group smashed records with first-day and weekend sales, crashing vendor websites and swamping the entire BT telephone network. "We are speechless," Gary Barlow said in a statement, "truly and utterly shocked."
This is not, it's worth noting, a state of affairs that anyone could have predicted six years ago, when the ex-members of Take That agreed to be interviewed for a no-holds-barred ITV documentary called For The Record. You get the impression the four band members whom Williams left behind in 1995 said yes to the documentary's director only because they felt they had nothing left to lose: their fortunes had waned almost as dramatically as Williams's star had risen â?? and it had risen to a degree of success so immense that, as he ruefully notes today, his 2006 album Rudebox can be widely decried as a career-stalling flop despite reaching number one in 14 countries. Within three years of Take That's split, Gary Barlow found himself without a record deal, unable to convince promoters to book him even on a small tour, a state of affairs that left him so distraught he effectively fled the country, relocating to LA. Mark Owen, too, had lost his record deal. There was something of a hike in his profile when he won Celebrity Big Brother in 2002, but not enough to kick-start his musical career: he ended up "spending my last penny" funding a solo tour of Britain's toilet venues. Suicidally depressed by Take That's split, Howard Donald's solo career never even left the launch pad â?? his debut single Speak Without Words was never released â?? while Jason Orange's attempts to reinvent himself as an actor were equally short-lived. After a couple of TV and theatre roles, he gave up, apparently unable to stand the audition process, and eventually went to South Trafford College to study biology and history. "Unfortunately, all four of us, especially Gary, of course, were being compared for 10 years with Rob's success, and actually I was really happy most of the time," Orange says. "What did my head in, what really vexed me in the 10 years I had off, if I was on a beach somewhere in Thailand, or at college â?? things I loved doing and chose to do â?? it was always going to be considered by other people as, 'Oh, he's taken a step down', 'Oh he's a failure', while Robbie's up there, 'Look at what he's doing now.'" It didn't help that Williams was so spectacularly ungracious in his victory, never missing an opportunity to attack Take That, and Barlow in particular, in interviews or on stage or even in the lyrics of his hit single No Regrets. "I sniped at Gaz," he nods today. "He never sniped at me."
