Meanwhile KJ Choi, Korea's favourite golfer, was sliding quietly through the pines. While everyone was watching everyone else this beautifully balanced, metronomic golfer was clipping his way up the rankings. As was Fred Couples. Now 50, his hair steel grey, his feet so tender he wears sneakers rather than golf shoes to negotiate Augusta's demanding hills, Couples is playing as well as he did when he won here 18 years ago.
The Alfred P Murrah building in Oklahoma City was bombed at 9.01 in the morning, as a normal working day on the Great Plains was getting under way â?? not by Islamic fundamentalists plotting in Afghan caves, but by a paramilitary unit of Americans who called themselves "patriots", led by a former serviceman and 1991 Gulf war veteran, Timothy McVeigh. McVeigh was executed in 2001, and his principal accomplice, Terry Nichols, is serving life.
The biggest question mark about this proto-book concerns the way in which it is illustrated. As Packer wrote in the essay quoted earlier, the press may have excelled itself in Baghdad, but "Iraq has not been a photographer's war". Really? When there are so many strong pictures coming out of the current wars by Sean Smith, Michael Kamber, Tim Hetherington and others? (Hetherington was with Junger in Afghanistan and co-directed their forthcoming documentary Restrepo.) Perhaps these are the exceptions that prove the rule, for Packer, it's important to note, is talking about photographers, not photography. In Iraq and Afghanistan we are perhaps glimpsing the end of the era of the combat photographer as a special category of occupation, the twilight of the photographer as novelist in the way that Capa (whose famous photo from the Spanish civil war is now believed to be a fiction) and Eugene Smith were visual novelists. Current photography from the frontline is defined absolutely by what it is of rather than who it is by. No photographer has been able to stamp a visual identity on what he depicted in the way that Capa or Tim Page managed, respectively, on D-Day or in Vietnam. Perhaps photographs are now simply too ubiquitous for that. So ubiquitous that, in a passage of Finkel's book, "photographs" refers not to actual physical records of the kind collected by Wilfred Owen (who carried photos of the dead and injured in his wallet) but a way of seeing, a state of damaged mind. Suffering from post-traumatic breakdown, one of the most heroic of Finkel's soldiers explains that he keeps seeing "photographs . . . Like a picture of Harrelson burning, in flames. I can't get that out of my head . . . It's just a slideshow in my head."
For anyone interested in the kings and queens of England it was a touching moment last year to see the heavy tomb cover lifted in Magdeburg Cathedral. The inscription said the occupant was Eadgyth, queen of the Germans, the Anglo-Saxon granddaughter of Alfred the Great, sister of Athelstan the first king of a united England. But was it really her? Now the results of the scientific examination are through: isotopes from her tooth enamel confirm that this early medieval woman, a regular horse rider who died in her mid-30s, had indeed spent her first years in southern England. It is her, after all.
There are an estimated 20,000 travelling England fans in South Africa, but thousands more expats and locals who support Premier League teams have swelled the numbers. The carnival atmosphere of the previous day on Cape Town's Victoria & Alfred Waterfront and in the bars and restaurants of Long Street was replaced by downbeat introspection.
With the same zeal with which he got there in the first place, Mohammad is now throwing himself into undergraduate life. "Studying a subject I absolutely love at Cambridge is still quite surreal," he says. But he loves the place and says "the most fantastic people in my life I have met at Cambridge". He has become an ambassador for the university, encouraging pupils from state schools to apply. He has also taken up rowing from scratch (progressing from novice crew to men's second division). He loves reciting poetry (he has TS Eliot's "The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock" off by heart). And Persian poets continue to be a solace to him. I ask him to recite a line that helped him through his life and he does â?? beautifully. It is by Hafiz, his father's favourite poet, and he translates it: A message has arrived to say that the days of sorrow will not last./What happened in the past did not last for ever./And nor will what is in the present last for ever either.
"The fact that this was seen for oral and pharyngeal cancers, but not laryngeal cancers, provides some evidence as to a possible specificity of effect," said Johanna Lampe of the division of public health sciences at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. She is also an editorial board member for the journal that published Hasibe's work. "These findings provide further impetus to pursue research to understand the role of coffee in head and neck cancer prevention," she added.
There may, though, be a downside to the tournament's pre-eminence. "The success of Wimbledon gives the impression that we are a tennis nation," says Jon Henderson, author of a recent biography of Britain's last Wimbledon men's singles champion Fred Perry (winner in 1934, 1935 and 1936), "but fundamentally we are not a tennis nation. We get beguiled and sidetracked by Wimbledon, and as a result of that we don't try hard enough."
The answer lies squarely in the nature of the public 'debate' on climate. For decades, one of the main tools in the arsenal of those seeking to prevent actions to reduce emissions has been to declare the that the science is too uncertain to justify anything. To that end, folks like Fred Singer, Art Robinson, the Cato Institute and the 'Friends' of Science have periodically organised letters and petitions to indicate (or imply) that 'very important scientists' disagree with Kyoto, or the Earth Summit or Copenhagen or the IPCC etc. These are clearly attempts at 'arguments from authority', and like most such attempts, are fallacious and, indeed, misleading.
It's obvious to me that it was not women Larkin hated, but the idea of marriage to one â?? and that seems fair enough. At his home in Norfolk, Anthony Thwaite, Larkin's friend and the editor both of the Selected Letters and of this new volume, laughs. "Yes!" he says. "Marriage: it's like promising to stand on one leg for the rest of your life, isn't it?" Thwaite believes that Larkin loved women. "His closest friends were women: Judy Egerton, Jean Hartley, his publisher. He liked Ann [Thwaite's wife, a biographer] very much. Winifred Arnott [a colleague on whom Larkin was sweet] and Ruth Bowman [his fianc?©e until 1950] are both still alive, and they keep the memory of him very warm. I think he was frightened of sex, but I think a lot of men are; it's a very easy thing to be frightened of."
