The paintings have so far appeared in three streets in the Gothic old quarter. One was found on the corner of Ferran and Aviny?? streets â?? home to the prostitutes who inspired Pablo Picasso to paint his famous collection of naked women, Les Demoiselles d'Avignon. A Picasso museum, housed in a medieval palace not far from the art school where the great painter trained, is among the draws that help make this one of the busiest tourism zones in Europe.
Two more street paintings were found in Carrer del Call and the Baixada de Sant Miquel â?? both in the tightly packed Gothic district, where tourists and local residents vie for space on the narrow, twisting streets.
Today, Beuve-M?©ry's name still appears alongside Le Monde's archaic Gothic masthead; and it was only in 1972 it put photos on the front page. Despite a â??5m redesign in 1995, the circulation has continued to fall (as have those of the great majority of papers worldwide, and some much more steeply), while its debts and need to recapitalise to face the future have risen.

I have spent hours in La Seu, an amazing example of Gothic architecture, studying the paintings, the side chapels, the tombs, the statues and one of the most beautiful cloisters I have ever seen â?? 13 white geese have inhabited it for over 400 years. La Seu has been Barcelona's iconic cathedral since the dawn of European Christianity, and the remains of one of the city's patron saints, the teenage girl martyr Santa Eul? lia (Laia is her local name), are interred in the crypt underneath the exquisite altar. She was martyred brutally in the fourth century and was the inspiration for a famous painting by John William Waterhouse, one of the great pre-Raphaelites. Legend has it that she was rolled up the hill close to the cathedral in a wooden barrel filled with broken glass. Pla?§a de la Seu in front of the Cathedral is the venue for an unmissable ritual performed every Saturday at 6pm â?? the sardana, which is Catalonia's national dance. If you are there, you will be forced to join in.
There are hundreds of great bars, particularly in the La Ribera district, but my top choice is Gimlet, an art deco haven. The bar itself is shaped like a piano, and the cocktails are as good as any mixed in Manhattan. La Ribera's main street, Passeig del Born, also has several chic boutiques, the Picasso Museum, another great Catalan Gothic church â?? Santa Maria del Mar â?? and the vast Parc de la Ciutadella, where you can see Gaud? structures, fountains, a zoo, sculptures and monuments left there since the Universal Exhibition of 1888 â?? some would say the catalyst for modernism.â?? "She's not far wrong," says a dripping wet Ian Dungavell, director of the Victorian Society and the first man to jump into the project's showpiece â?? a 33-metre (108ft) pool beneath a glazed gothic roof exposed for the first time since the 1960s.
The room is a Victorian-gothic fantasy of beautifully carved arches, low-lit and groin-vaulted. Chandeliers hang from the ceiling and, while veteran musician Peter Straker croons a Randy Newman hit from the stage, a predominantly grey-haired audience, smartly dressed and in couples, nods decorously in time with the beat.
He was key in making "medievalism the centre of English experience", said Kelly. Without Scott, "there would probably have been a neo-classical houses of parliament rather than a neo-gothic houses of parliament".
